The book is organized into two sections. Section I presents the critical perspectives of this book and the process details. Chapter 1 describes background information on specific concerns facing the public schools regarding discipline. Chapter 2 provides a review and analysis of traditional and current school discipline systems leading to the need for a proactive discipline plan. A brief critique is also provided on effective professional development practices. Chapter 3 presents an elaboration of the critical underpinning for the success of a school-wide plan defining the role of administrative support, specifically the role of the principal. Details are provided highlighting concrete steps for the principal to take in order to ensure successful implementation. Chapter 4 describes a process for implementing a school-wide plan through the agency of a school leadership team. The school leadership team is designed to provide a clear-cut process for ensuring reliable implementation of the plan by the entire faculty.
Section II provides detailed information on the content of the seven steps for the proactive school-wide discipline team: Chapter 5, Purpose statement; Chapter 6, School-wide behavior expectations; Chapter 7, Teaching the behavior expectations, Chapter 8, Maintaining the behavior expectations; Chapter 9, Correcting problem behavior; Chapter 10, Utilizing the data; and Chapter 11, Sustaining the plan for the long haul.
The reader is referred to an Appendix section at the back of the book which contains all of the checklists, forms, and plans presented throughout the book. These appendices may be reproduced or adapted for personal use in the classroom, school, or district. |
